A Holistic Approach to Anxiety & Depression

If you are feeling depressed or anxious, there are many ways to manage these feelings beyond medication. Enter holistic healing.  

 

If you aren’t familiar with a holistic approach, it refers to assessing the whole person and the contributing environmental factors = not just the underlying symptoms. Holistic treatments are designed to heal the mind, body, and soul.  

 

Here are some of my favorite ways to heal anxiety and depression holistically.  

 

Yoga & Meditation 

 

Yoga and meditation are beneficial practices for your mind, body, and soul. In general, yoga relaxes the entire body and eases anxiety and depression.  

 

The goal of meditation isn't necessarily to ‘clear your mind,’ so no worries if you close your eyes to find your thoughts racing. Rather, meditation allows you to become the observer of your thoughts. You can begin to distinguish your “higher self” from the endless bickering in your mind and allow intense emotions and thoughts to simply pass by without judgment.  

 

The purpose isn’t to erase anxiety altogether, but rather to develop a sense of safety knowing that anxious feelings are impermanent. In doing so, chances are you will better regulate your nervous system and promote a sense of calm, peace, and balance that can benefit both your overall health and emotional well-being.  

 

It can also be used to relax and cope with stress by refocusing your attention on something calming rather than what is giving you anxiety. These ‘attention targets’ might include deep breathing, a sound bath, a calming visual, or simply being in nature and taking in your surroundings.  

Connecting with Nature 

 

As mentioned, spending time in nature can be a form of meditation. Just going outside and sitting in the sun or taking a walk can make a big impact on feelings of anxiety or depression. When you are feeling anxious or down, step away from the stressors of your life and get lost for a few moments in nature. Trust me, it will feel amazing! 

 

Energy Healing 

 

Reiki, a form of energy healing, releases the flow of energy throughout the body by clearing blockages within your lifeforce, or qi. This release helps with pain, reduces stress, and enhances relaxation.

Acupuncture 

 

Similar to Reiki, acupuncture focuses on the body’s energy. Needles are inserted into the skin at specific points on the body to stimulate the central nervous system. This in turn released chemicals into the brain, spinal cord, and muscles. Thus, the body’s natural healing abilities are stimulated, promoting physical and emotional well-being.
