What is the Mind-Body Connection?

There is no doubt that our minds and bodies are intertwined; the mind governs the body, and the body houses the mind. This was known as the mind-body connection by ancient philosophers.

Today, when we talk about the mind-body link, we mean how our thoughts, feelings, and mindset can affect our biological processes in either a good or bad way, and how our physical health can affect how our minds work.

Here are some tips to keep a good mind-body balance so you can take on each day as your healthiest self!

Take Time for Yourself

Often when we aren’t feeling our best mentally, it’s because we have been too busy to tend to our needs. To stay physically and emotionally healthy, you need to make time for self-care.

Choose something that keeps you present and quiets your mind. Consider:

  • Meditation

  • Taking a hot bath

  • Reading

  • Listening to music

  • Getting a massage

  • Taking a walk

Try one of these practices, and see how you feel!

Eat Healthily

Have you heard the old saying, “You are what you eat?” It’s true! The ingredients you are fueling your body with has a huge impact on how you feel.

Choose foods that nourish your body. Of course, the fresher the food, the better, so make sure to include a variety of whole fruits, vegetables, and proteins in your diet. Keep anything that comes in a box or plastic to a minimum!

Get Moving

Moving your body is one of the best ways to support the mind-body connection.

Endorphins, our natural painkillers,

are released in our bodies when we exercise.

Types of exercises to try might include:

  • Yoga

  • Spinning

  • Kickboxing

  • Dance

  • Weightlifting

  • Barre

  • Pilates

  • Running

  • Walking

  • Swimming

Do what you love and you will look forward to exercising each day! Whatever exercise you participate in, make sure to not overdo it and to maintain proper form so that you don’t set yourself up for injury. Remember: exercise isn’t a competition, but a way to take care of yourself.

Let it Go

Though we may not realize it, we hold onto many types of emotional pain in our bodies and minds.

Any type of emotional trauma can take

a toll on our mind-body connection.

Letting go of this pain is the first step to healing and moving forward. You can learn to release your frustrations, pain, and trauma by journaling, meditating, and learning to forgive with EPT™ therapy.

Laugh

There’s a great reason why people say laughter is the best medicine! It reduces stress hormones in the body and strengthens your immune system.

Make laughter a top priority in your life by:

  • Listening to your favorite podcasts

  • Watching funny YouTube videos

  • Watching a favorite sitcom rerun

  • Laughing with friends and family

  • Dancing like a goofball with your loved ones
