Why Holistic Self-Care is Important for Your Wellbeing
How well are you taking care of yourself these days? No, truly, just think about it for a minute. You might be in tune with how you are feeling or maybe your self-care has gone by the wayside recently.
I get it. Life can get busy. It’s hard to juggle a career, family, and friends all at once. With all of the demands of everyday life, it can be difficult to prioritize self-care. Let’s talk about approaching your health holistically, and some practices that you can add to your daily self-care routine.
Why is Holistic Self Care So Important
There are many different definitions of wellness, but for me, it means actively pursuing decisions, pursuits, and lifestyles that result in a condition of holistic (whole-body) health.
Generally, holistic health is often broken down into dimensions such as mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual, but social and environmental aspects can impact your holistic well-being too. When we begin with a broad definition of wellness, we can better hone our focus.
Here are ways it can impact your well-being:
Movement, exercise, and rest
Nutrition
Personal and professional development
Your physical environment
Relationships and communication
Spirituality

The Mind-Body Connection
Of course, each of these seven aspects of your health is equally important, but I want to focus on the mind-body connection, which is often neglected.
Your mind and body are powerful allies, and how you feel is directly correlated to your thoughts. Think about a time that you were stressed and recall if you had any physical pain manifest from any emotional stressors you were experiencing.
You might have experienced stress, discomfort, headaches, stomachaches, or even trouble sleeping. Your emotions can also be severely impacted by physical discomfort or health issues, which can result in stress, anxiety, and sadness. It's crucial to tackle your self-care regimen holistically and comprehensively.
When it comes to incorporating holistic self-care into your life, here are a few of my favorite practices that can make a big difference to your overall well-being:
Mental
Seek out learning opportunities that will challenge your brain regularly. Always maintain intellectual curiosity and learn new things often. Go to the library, read a book. Listen to a podcast. Get that mental stimulation going!
Emotional
Begin by letting go of toxic emotions, and cultivate positive emotions such as forgiveness, compassion, kindness, gratitude, generosity, and contentment.
Try mind-body practices such as meditation, deep breathing, and relaxation techniques. Focus on strengthening the connection between your mind and body to improve your health.
Physical
Listen to your body. It tells you a lot! Get a good night’s sleep, eat nutritious food, get out in the sunshine, and move your body each day!
Treat yourself to a massage regularly. Massage therapy combines self-care and professional care and helps to reduce pain, ease stress and tension, and promote overall relaxation.
Spiritual
Live authentically. Find your purpose, meaning, and fulfillment by tapping into your inner self.
Connect with your inner self and the natural world around you with time spent outside. Read a book, lay outside in the sunshine, and journal about your feelings. If you are part of a spiritual community, engage with your community often.
Social
Make time for your family and friends, and enjoy socializing often. Volunteer for a cause that you believe in. Call your Grandma or Mom. Write a letter. Reach out, I promise you’ll feel more connected!
Holistic Wellness Mantras
Make holistic wellness a part of your life. Repeat these mantras daily:

I will keep an active mind, and learn something new regularly.
I will relinquish the need for external approval.
